Chagas disease is a debilitating and often fatal disease resulting from infection with the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. The infection and disease affects up to 20 million people in Mexico, Central America, and South America, making Chagas disease the highest impact disease in Latin America. In addition to being a disease of poverty, Chagas disease is also poverty-promoting in striking hardest in young adults. Chagas disease has recently gained some notoriety in the United States due to both endogenous ("home-grown") and imported cases, prompting concern about the safety of blood and organ/tissue donations.
The Chagas Disease Foundation was established to promote the diagnosis, control, prevention, and treatment of Chagas disease. The Foundation will use its resources to facilitate scientific research, to educate and train researchers, to disseminate information on control and prevention, and for the development of policies for the sustainable prevention of Chagas disease.
The Chagas Disease Foundation was incorporated in August 2007 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are just beginning to establish our web presence with this site. Please come back and check as we populate the site with information on Chagas disease and the efforts of the Foundation.
